Nemone Metaxas: My career in broadcasting

Join us for a behind-the-scenes insight into BBC 6 Music presenter Nemone Metaxas' 30-year career in broadcasting. An inspiring and entertaining session with alumna Nemone Metaxas, whose career bridges two vibrant worlds: radio and psychotherapy. In the session, Nemone will share stories from years spent producing radio shows and interviewing an extraordinary range of guests. Expect anecdotes, reflections, and audio clips featuring voices such as Robert De Niro, Tim Minchin, and Cameron Diaz. She’ll explore how encounters with artists, actors, and creatives have shaped her work, and how her passions for music and psychotherapy have gradually woven together into a unique professional path. This event is part of Hills Road’s evening speaker series and will take place on Thursday, the 15th of October in the Robinson Theatre, at Hills Road. The talk will last approximately an hour, after which there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience. About Nemone Nemone has been at the forefront of UK national broadcasting for nearly 30 years, with the last 26 at the BBC presenting all their major networks. She is a familiar daytime voice on BBC 6 Music and her passion for electronic music led to curating a specialist show (Nemone’s Electric Ladyland) for the best part of a decade during the 2010s. She’s also hosted on prime-time BBC TV, ITV and BBC Sports. Before her career in broadcasting, Nemone’s fascination with the complexities of the human mind and how we relate to one another led to her taking a Psychology BSc at Manchester University. And after a career spent in the interests of hearing and communicating people’s stories, she returned to study Psychotherapy, gaining her master’s and she now sees clients on a weekly basis alongside broadcasting and DJing. As a qualified psychotherapist, Nemone is an insightful interviewer and vocal champion of mental health issues. She hosts her award-winning Journeys in Sound series: a more intimate enquiry into our relationship with music, interviewing musicians about the experiences and music that have shaped who they are. Guests have included Jeff Goldblum, Self Esteem (Rebecca Lucy Taylor), Kae Tempest, Garbage’s Shirley Manson, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, Blur’s Graham Coxon, The Slit’s Viv Albertine and Paul Weller. Nemone has recently worked on on the 14th series of Journeys in Sound for BBC 6 Music and BBC Sounds featuring Radiohead’s Ed O’Brian and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, a new programme on the psychology of music and the mind for BBC Radio 3 with conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, pianist Steven Osborne and percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie (both airing in May), she can be heard interviewing the Palestinian DJ and producer Sama Abdulhadi for the inaugural episode in the Mastery podcast series on Spotify.
