Full description from organizer

Farmer Workshop Farmers are being encouraged to increase diversity across the farm, from broadening rotations, growing species rich cover crops and companion cropping but what evidence do we have that this benefits your farm and the environment? In this practical workshop we’ll explore the evidence behind crop diversity on farm and what this means for your bottom line. We’ll also explore the world of soil microbiology and take a closer look at soil life under the microscope and in the field. With presentations by: Tom Sizmur: Professor and co-head of the Department of Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Reading. Tom’s research focuses on improving the health of agricultural soils and enhancing soil carbon storage. In this presentation, Tom will share research findings on increasing species diversity in both cropping and cover crop mixes, with an update on the Europe-wide Leguminose project. Jade Prince: Head of Soil Services at Hutchinsons and a 2026 Nuffield Farming Scholar. Jade will introduce the three pillars of soil health (physical chemical and biological) before taking a deeper dive into the soil food web. Using fresh soil samples, the session will highlight the biological activity and processes occurring beneath the soil surface, and how they influence soil structure, nutrient cycling, plant health, and overall soil function. Plus, updates from Thames Water & Catchment Sensitive Farming and a field walk with Owen York at Bury Grange Farm. BASIS and NRoSO points available and buffet lunch provided.
