Full description from organizerShow less
View two rare Qur'an folios from the Belbagi Collection that trace the journey of Maghribi script between Morocco and Spain. The two manuscripts demonstrate illustrate the migration of Arabic text and Quranic arts from Morocco to Iberia. They represent the development of the Maghribi script from two dynasties renowned for their contribution to the decorative arts: the Nasirids of Grenada and the Merinids of Fes. As texts of the Iberian peninsula, they represent the Western artistic tradition of Quranic manuscripts. Please note: There will usually be students studying nearby, we will therefore ask visitors that the quiet of the library is respected, that no photographs of students are taken, and that visitors do not go into the main part of the library (i.e. no further than the display case). Bags will need to be left in the Front Hall. About The Belbagi Collection The Belbagi Collection is a private archive of rare medieval Islamic manuscripts featuring historical Quran folios written in Maghribi script from Al-Andalus and the Maghreb. Assembled by Zaid M. Belbagi, the collection has been showcased in partnership with cultural institutions and auction houses like Sotheby's. About The Cambridge Festival of Islamic Arts The Cambridge Festival of Islamic Arts runs from 19 to 29 November 2026, bringing performances, exhibitions, lectures, and workshops to Cambridge's historic colleges, museums, and cultural spaces. Open to everyone, the festival celebrates the beauty and diversity of Islamic arts, and, fifty years on from the landmark 1976 World of Islam Festival, carries that spirit into our own time.
