Our Hook Ups are relaxed community fishing sessions where we fish, learn together, prepare and cook our catch, eat and spend time by the sea. You don’t need any fishing experience and you don’t need your own equipment. Whether you want to learn to cast, catch your first fish, share what you already know, or just spend some time on the shingle with us, you’re welcome. What happens at a Hook Up? We meet on the beach, have a short welcome and introductions, then spend the session fishing, sharing skills, preparing fish, cooking and spending time together. Fishing is always weather and sea-condition dependent, and there’s never any guarantee we’ll catch anything. The Hook Up is as much about learning, sharing knowledge and being together as it is about the catch. Who are Hook Ups for? Blackfish is Black-led and our Hook Ups centre Black and Global Majority people and communities. We want these sessions to feel safe, relaxed and welcoming, particularly for people who have not traditionally felt represented or comfortable in fishing and coastal spaces. Children and young people are welcome with a responsible adult. Cost Hook Ups are free to attend. If you’re able to, donations help us cover fishing equipment, bait, food and the costs of keeping the sessions accessible. Travel Bursary: The Baobab Fund reimburses half of travel costs for Black or Global Majority attendees who need support. Send receipt + bank details after the event to claim. Where? We meet directly on Fisherman’s Beach in Hythe. If you stand in front of The Lazy Shack facing the sea, Fisherman’s Beach is to the right. Walk past the boats on the right-hand side and you’ll find us set up on the beach just beyond them. Please note that Fisherman’s Beach is a shingle beach and is not currently wheelchair accessible.
