Chris Wood LIVE

Chris Wood Live at the Norwegian Church Arts Centre Chris Wood is an uncompromising songwriter, self-taught musician and one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary English folk. A truth-seeker in a world of soundbites and distractions, his writing combines gentle intelligence, wry humour and surgical clarity, weaving traditional music with contemporary parables to illuminate the unofficial history of England. His songs celebrate the sheer one-thing-after-anotherness of life, finding beauty, challenge and meaning in the everyday. His acclaimed album So Much to Defend explores subjects as varied as minor league football, empty nest syndrome, learning to swim, Cook-in Sauce and the Gecko as a metaphor for contemporary society. His chilling ballad Hollow Point, about the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, earned him one of his six BBC Folk Awards. Tom Robinson and Chris Difford are fans, while Stick in the Wheel and The Unthanks cite him as an influence. A key member of The Imagined Village alongside Billy Bragg, Martin Carthy and Eliza Carthy, Chris has collaborated with an impressive range of artists, including Karine Polwart, Andy Cutting and Andy Irvine, and has performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company. His independent spirit and uncompromising vision shine through everything he does. On stage, he is a wise and soulful craftsman, drawing effortlessly from an enviable repertoire of songs before revealing another gem. His concerts are a cliché-free zone: uplifting, challenging and full of humanity. Doors open: 7pm Performance begins: 7:30pm Interval: 8:15pm Performance ends: 9:30pm Timings are subject to change
