Please bring your own refreshments Kit list: Gardening gloves, walking stick, tape measure, mobile with Mammal Mapper app Clothing: Please wear clothing and footwear appropriate to the weather and rough ground The session will start with a short introduction to the Harvest Mouse, its nests, and surveying and recording techniques. This will be followed by an on-site survey and recording of any nests found. We will be looking for empty summer nests that are no longer occupied; therefore, no mice will be disturbed or seen. No previous experience is required, just a keen eye to spot the nests amongst the dense grasses! The training sessions will equip you with all the knowledge required to carry out your own survey for harvest mouse nests. SMG would encourage you to then submit your records to the National Harvest Mouse Survey (NHMS) and Somerset Environmental Records Centre. The Harvest Mouse is classified as Near Threatened in Britain, and more data about its numbers and locations are vitally important to help determine what conservation actions should be put in place. SMG will also be organising surveys in the areas of Somerset that have the fewest or no records of harvest mouse populations. More details to follow on dates and locations shortly.
