THE GENERAL STRIKE/ Y STREIC GYFFREDINOL

A screening on Britain’s 1926 General Strike, with an introduction from social historian, Darren Macey, followed by a discussion. THE GENERAL STRIKE/ Y STREIC GYFFREDINOL is an in-person film screening and discussion for people interested in the General Strike and its history. About the film A hundred years after Britain’s first and only national strike, a recently discovered documentary, THE GENERAL STRIKE: A Revolution Betrayed?, tells the story of the strike, how close it came to success and the disastrous consequences of its failure. Made in the early 1970s, the film recounts how workers across the country came out in support of more than a million miners who had been locked out of work for refusing to accept lower pay. Moving testimony from people who were alive at the time shows how the strike faced the full force of the British establishment and was ultimately betrayed by union leaders.
