Slow down, notice deeply, and explore nature through drawing and curiosity at this gentle, immersive woodland workshop. Join a small, welcoming group for a calm and creative day of nature journaling in the beautiful woodland of Silk Wood at Westonbirt Arboretum. Whether you’re new to drawing or already keep a journal, this workshop offers simple guidance, mindful observation and time to connect with nature. Nature journaling is a gentle, creative practice of observing and recording the natural world. Through slowing down to notice more, draw and write, we deepen our connection to nature, ourselves and others. You don’t need to be “good” at drawing to enjoy nature journaling — curiosity and noticing are much more important than artistic skill. Through simple, enjoyable step-by-step exercises, we’ll explore drawing as a way of paying attention — drawing to see more clearly. During this workshop you will: • Practice simple observation and drawing skills • Create a personal record of the seasons • Develop creativity and mindful attention We will immerse ourselves in the trees as we take time to practise this enjoyable lifelong skill, learning to slow down and see the woodland in new ways, moving between noticing the big picture and small details of light, colour, pattern and texture. The journal page becomes a place to capture and deepen our experiences while exploring the beautiful surroundings of Silk Wood. These small-group workshops (maximum 10 participants) allow space for quiet observation, personal guidance and shared learning. We will use the Community Shelter in Silk Wood as our base for guidance, sharing and journaling, with short walks to nearby spots and some quiet solo time. This workshop is suitable for all levels, including complete beginners. You can work quietly in your own way, or take part in a series of gentle warm-up exercises exploring observation, drawing techniques and ways of working outdoors in changing conditions. The day is designed to be relaxed and supportive — a chance to try things out, ask questions and learn from each other. We will also explore the idea of “glimmers” — small moments of beauty and connection in nature that calm our nervous systems and spark curiosity. Most importantly, you’ll leave feeling nourished by a few hours of slow connection with nature, with journal pages to look back on — perhaps the beginning of a nature journaling practice you can return to again and again. LocationThe workshop is based at the Community Shelter in Silk Wood, nestled among trees and woodland life. The shelter is approximately a 20-minute walk from the Welcome Building, with nearby accessible compost toilets and covered seating. Please allow plenty of time to park and enter the arboretum gates (there may sometimes be queues at busy times). The path to the shelter is accessible with some sloped sections. We will be moving around the woodland, sometimes on muddy tracks. Please feel free to contact me in advance if you would like to discuss any access needs, mobility or hidden disabilities. The route and the shelter are accessible by electric scooter (available to hire for free, but need to be reserved in advance). What’s included: • All basic art materials are provided (watercolour pencils, water brushes, paper, pencils and pens). • You’re welcome to bring your own lightweight art materials or a favourite journal if you prefer. • Hot drinks will be available during the workshop. • The shelter has a few moveable chairs and floor cushions available for sitting in your chosen spot, and lots of fixed wooden seating under the shelter. • Admission to the Arboretum What to bring: • Suitable outdoor clothing for the weather (extra layers, waterproofs, hats and gloves if needed). We can sometimes feel colder when sitting still and there is no fully enclosed area at the shelter. • As in all woodland settings, we need to be 'tick aware' and it is recommended to wear full length trousers and closed shoes/ covered ankles. Light coloured clothing also helps us to spot ticks. More information will be provided on booking and on the day. • Sun hat and sunscreen on warmer days. • Insect repellent • A packed lunch and snacks. • Drinking water (there is no tap at the shelter). • If you have a lightweight camping stool or blanket, you may find it helpful to bring one to have extra flexibility and comfort.
