Explore this Grade II listed building, designed in the Art Nouveau style. Learn about it's architecture and use... This tour and talk will demonstrate both the architecture and the use of the building in its early years as a library and school… The building that houses Gosport Museum and Art Gallery was opened in 1901 as a library, school of art and technical school. It was designed in the Art Nouveau style and evidence for the style can still be found, especially in the interior of the building. Dot Bedenham will be the tour guide demonstrating both the outside (weather permitting) and the interior of the building. She will show how the architectural style, including features on the old classroom doors, banisters and glass, can still be seen. She will point out where art and science were taught and where girls learned to cook. A souvenir photograph album showing the building, schoolteachers, pupils and classrooms was produced in 1914 and is a rare and wonderful discovery from that time. Rose Smith will show photographs from this remarkable album. She will identify Leslie Keating, Headmaster of the technical school and Ernest Draycott, Master of the school of art, and give an insight into the work of these early schools. Can she name other teachers, even pupils? The narrative of both guides will be interspersed with memories of later pupils of the schools, some of it quite surprising! Your visit will begin with a tour of the building and conclude in The Roberts Room, where you can sit to view the visuals and interesting descriptions.
