Adriana Yañez The First Women uncovers the untold stories of the pioneering women who formed Brazil’s first national women’s soccer team. Although women were legally barred from playing soccer until 1979, these trailblazers broke barriers and represented Brazil internationally throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Yet, despite their achievements, they received little public recognition or reward. Today, these former athletes are in their 60s and live in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. To support themselves, they work as street vendors, Uber drivers, construction workers, and soccer coaches in community programs. Nevertheless, their passion for the game endures. They gather to play soccer, coach young players, and watch Brazil’s matches on television, sharing moments of camaraderie and resilience. By blending personal stories with historical context, Adriana Yañez‘s documentary offers a moving tribute to their strength and unity. Ultimately, it challenges the erasure of their contributions in a country renowned for its football excellence. This documentary carries an official 12 age rating due to mild inappropriate language and thematic elements, but some festival or special screenings have also been rated the film as General / Universal. This screening is part of The Spanish Film Club series, organized by IberoDocs in collaboration with Edinburgh Council and was made possible with the support of Pragda, SPAIN arts & culture, and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain. We're excited about this special cinema event celebrating community football, with a particular focus on women football. We'll be screening The First Women, a beautiful, feature-length documentary following the Brazilian national women's team, a film full of inspiring characters, friendship, and community spirit.
