Who Can You Trust? Psychopaths, Leadership & Thriving Through Turbulence

Mark Miller's interactive leadership session with guest Mary Turner Thomson, exploring trust, manipulation and better decisions. This October, Mark Miller is bringing Thriving Through Turbulence back to Edinburgh as an extended, interactive experience for business owners and senior leaders who want to step away from day-to-day activity, see their businesses more clearly and examine the decisions and behaviours shaping their organisations. Mark will be joined by special guest Mary Turner Thomson - international bestselling author of two books and the woman at the centre of an extraordinary story of deception, manipulation and survival. Would you recognise a psychopath in your business? People capable of causing the greatest damage rarely appear to be an obvious threat. They may seem confident, charming, intelligent and persuasive—the very qualities frequently rewarded in business. Psychopathy is estimated at around 1% of the general population, yet one landmark study found that almost 4% of executives met the research threshold for psychopathy. Perhaps that shouldn't surprise us. We're remarkably good at mistaking psychopathic traits for leadership: charm becomes charisma, grandiosity becomes confidence and ruthlessness becomes decisiveness. Sometimes we don't discover the difference until the turbulence starts. The question is whether we can distinguish confidence from manipulation, ambition from self-interest and genuine trustworthiness from a convincing performance. What will you gain? Together, Mark and Mary will explore: • How pressure affects judgement, behaviour and leadership • How to step outside daily operations and see your business more clearly • The stage your business has reached—and what it needs from you next • The difference between impressive behaviour and trustworthy character • How damaging personalities affect teams, culture and performance • What enables leaders and businesses to recover and move forward This will be honest, practical and thought-provoking - not abstract theory or generic motivational messages. You will leave with fresh perspective, practical ideas and important questions about your judgement, leadership and business. Who should attend? Business owners, entrepreneurs, CEOs, managing directors and senior leaders navigating growth, change, uncertainty or difficult decisions - and anyone who needs time and space to see their business differently.
