Full description from organizerShow less
Explore anxiety, PDA/EDA and strategies to support learners showing extreme demand avoidance. This practical and informative session explores how to support learners who experience extreme anxiety and demand avoidance, often associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Pathological/Extreme Demand Avoidance (PDA/EDA). We will begin by examining the nature of anxiety and tracing the history and understanding of PDA/EDA. Participants will explore why some children on the spectrum show a persistent resistance to everyday demands, considering the three types of demand and the various forms of resistance that may occur. The session will also focus on identifying and applying effective strategies to support learners experiencing demand avoidance. With a workshop-style approach, there will be plenty of opportunities to share experiences, reflect on practice, and discuss real-life examples. Trainer Lisa has over 20 years' experience in the field of Autism and is a parent of a young person diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. Lisa has a BA Honours degree 1st Class in Childhood and Youth Studies (Open University) and a Post Graduate Diploma and Certificate in Autism from the University of Birmingham. In addition, she has attended numerous training workshops including P.E.C.S. (Picture Exchange Communication System), social stories and the use of visual prompts, sensory processing difficulties, managing anxiety and sexual understanding. Lisa has worked with young people on the spectrum in a variety of settings including education, social care and the local community. She provides training and advisory services to a range of professionals for the education and care sector. Cost £45 per person for SWIFT member schools | £65 per person standard price.
