Full description from organizerShow less
Want to learn how to print Cyanotype images onto clay? Using bisque and glazed tiles we will show you how! We are super excited to run our first day long session learning how to use Cyanotype on ceramics. Working with Diane from Muddy Fingers and printmaking expert Nick Christie from Incubate Printmaking studio we will use images and objects to print onto clay. The morning session will involve using pre bisque fired pottery as a surface for the Cyanotype images. We will go through how to mix, store and use the solution and what objects and images work best. There will be 4-6 tiles to play with which could be framed for the wall afterwards. You are welcome to bring small pieces of lacy type fabric/plants/chain/feathers etc which may be able to be used otherwise we will have a good selection of objects and photographs to choose from. In the afternoon session we will learn how to produce beautiful Prussian blue photographs on glazed tiles. This workshop will introduce a method for exposing cyanotypes onto ceramics. Cyanotype photography is a 19th century process, using a UV sensitive emulsion, which can be coated onto many different kinds of surfaces. Once exposed to enough UV light, the material is immersed in water, revealing a Prussian blue photograph or impression. This process is commonly used on paper and fabric, however the process of exposing onto glass and ceramics involves a few extra steps. Whether or not you have tried the cyanotype process before, you will still be able to participate in this class. The cyanotype solution must be carefully cooked into a mixture which includes gelatin, in order for it to stick to ceramics. Nick will show you how to create the mixture, and the method for coating the tiles. The next step is then to expose the surface of the glass to UV light, and develop in water. You will be able to take home your creations on the day. This process has the quality of a handmade artwork, and no two prints are ever the same. This workshop is only for adults and beginners are more than welcome. It would also suit someone who is wanting to experiment with print and ceramics to develop their decorating techniques. Everything made in the class will be able to be taken home at the end of the day. No refunds or transfers Wear old clothes you don't mind getting dirty/stained. Aprons provided You may need to continue rinsing your work at home but we will advise on the day.
