Full description from organizer

An evening of curry and conversation with crime writers Christopher Brookmyre, Jane Hamilton & Ashlie McAnally. Curry & Crime: When Fact Meets Fiction Date & Time: November 25, 2026 at 6:15 PM (GMT) Venue: Razias, Airdrie. Join us for an engaging evening of 'Curry and Crime' featuring three amazing writers: Christopher Brookmyer (Crime Fiction Writer), Jane Hamilton (True Crime Writer & Journalist), and Ashlie McAnally (Crime Fiction Writer & Journalist). This unique event explores the intersection of fact and fiction in crime storytelling and will double as a live recording of an episode of the podcast, Footnotes on Crime. Footnotes on Crime is a true crime podcast with a difference, focused on individuals whose lives have been directly touched by crime: survivors, witnesses, investigators, and others, particularly those who have gone on to document their experiences in writing, film or through other creative means. Hosted by Katie McGrath and Colin Kerr Mathieson, the podcast is currently in the process of recording its second season (more at www.footnotesoncrime.com). All profits from ticket sales will be donated to the Moira Anderson Foundation, a local charity. The Moira Anderson Foundation’s vision is to live in a world free from Childhood Sexual Abuse. Their mission is raising awareness of Childhood Sexual Abuse in society, building trust with survivors and offering a range of therapeutic services in a safe and caring environment, and reducing the impact of trauma. There will also be a raffle held on the evening - top prize is an invitation to join a future episode of Footnotes on Crime as it is recorded live - with opportunity to put questions to one of our amazing guests. Donations to the Moira Anderson Foundation will also be taken on the evening (cash or card). More about the speakers… Chris Brookmyre is the author of more than thirty crime and SF novels, including Black Widow, which won the McIlvanney Prize for Scottish Crime Novel of the Year and the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year; and The Cracked Mirror, which won the 2024 McIlvanney Prize. He has also collaborated with his wife, Marisa Haetzman, to write five historical crime novels under the pseudonym Ambrose Parry, including The Way of All Flesh and The Death of Shame. His work has been adapted for stage, television, radio and even a video game. His latest novel is Quite Ugly One Evening. (More at www.brookmyre.co.uk). Jane Hamilton is a former tabloid reporter who worked for most of Scotland’s national newspapers both as a freelance journalist and staffer during an award-winning 25-year career. Best known for her investigations into serial killers Peter Tobin and Bible John, Hamilton was a regular nominee for the Scottish Press Awards for dozens of hard-hitting national exclusives. Hamilton successfully helped to change Scottish Government policy for multiple postmortems on victims of crime and has successfully lobbied and won the creation of a Victim’s Commissioner for Scotland over a five-year campaign Justice for Shaun. She is also a respected commentator for radio and television and has appeared in several true crime documentaries. Jane is the author of Hunting Shadows: Peter Tobin – The truth about the serial killer who hid in plain sight; short story collection Tell Me A Story; and the forthcoming The Escape Artist (coming March 2027). Ashlie McAnally is a former court reporter and now writes for Scottish national newspapers as a freelancer. Her debut novel Murder Central is a crime thriller set in Glasgow. McAnally currently lectures Journalism at Strathclyde University and has recently broadened her scope of work into filmmaking, with her venture Tartan Yarns. We are excited to share an evening with our speakers and guests with a twist – we plan to interrogate the lines between fact and fiction and get to the bottom of the writing process and motivation behind the words on the pages. Included in ticket price - Two-course Indian curry from buffet selection (standard portion) - pakora and choice of 4 curries, with one vegetarian option served with rice or plain naan bread. Please note this is not an all-you-can-eat buffet. Drinks can be purchased separately from the venue and are not included in the ticket price. For more information on the schedule for the evening, please see 'Agenda' section below. Please note - Authors may bring along copies of their books for sale and signing on the evening. Audio / video / photography of the event will be recorded and may be used in a future episode of Footnotes on Crime. If anyone does not wish to be photographed or recorded, please let one of the team know at the start of the evening.
