The breathy, unhurried trumpet; the hushed, almost confessional voice — together they turned heartbreak into something you wanted to sit inside of. Chet never shouted to be heard. He simply let the silence do half the work, and audiences have been leaning in ever since. Tonight, we bring that spirit back to the Patchworks stage with a tribute to one of jazz’s most quietly devastating voices — tender, intimate, and unmistakably cool. Karl Charity Karl studied trumpet at the Royal College of Music, cutting his teeth in the stage bands of West End musicals including Ain’t Misbehavin’, Five Guys Named Mo, Sophisticated Ladies and Soul Sister, as well as with the Joe Loss Big Band and UB40. But it was jazz that finally claimed him — drawn in by the songs of Chet Baker, Mark Murphy, Nat King Cole, Mel Tormé and Antonio Jobim. Whenever Karl performs, he takes the audience with him on a musical journey, singing from the heart with a natural warmth that always wins people over. Karl has recorded his own album, Calling Card, produced by Liane Carroll and mixed by Derek Nash at Crowne Pocket Recording Studios. “I have had the pleasure of working with Karl over many years, and without exception, the man delivers a true, complete performance and makes the musicians want to rise to his instinctive level.” — Liane Carroll Karl has amassed an impressive collection of jazz standards, from the Great American Songbook to Gershwin, Sondheim and Kurt Weill, and produces several acclaimed shows with his band — including tributes to Chet Baker and Nat King Cole, and music from 42nd Street, Guys and Dolls, Wild Party and West Side Story. He has appeared at many of London’s finest jazz venues, including Ronnie Scott’s, The Pheasantry, Crazy Coqs, Le Gavroche and the 606 Club, as well as festivals and theatres across Europe and South America. In recent years, Karl has shared the stage with some of jazz’s great performers, including Liane Carroll, Ian Shaw, Tina May and Derek Nash. So join us for an evening of smoky, soulful trumpet and vocals, as we celebrate the timeless music of Chet Baker.
