The 250th Anniversary of Richmond Bridge

A joint meeting with Richmond Local History Society to mark the anniversary of Richmond’s iconic bridge, first opened in September 1776 This joint meeting with Richmond Local History Society marks the 250th anniversary of Richmond’s iconic Grade 1 listed bridge, first opened to pedestrians in September 1776 and to other traffic in January 1777, and funded by tolls – from a halfpenny for a pedestrian to a half crown for a coach and horses. Designed by James Paine and Kenton Couse, it was described as “… a simple, yet elegant structure, and, from its happy situation, is … one of the most beautiful ornaments of the river …” The London Magazine, 1779. Local author Mark Lucas tells the story of one of the Borough’s finest and best-known architectural assets and the oldest surviving bridge across the River Thames in London. The meeting will be at Duke Street Church, Richmond TW9 1DH on Monday 14 September at 8:00pm, with doors opening at 7:30pm. Wine and soft drinks will be available. The event will be streamed on Zoom – a link will be emailed to Richmond Society members shortly before the meeting. Free for members in person and online. Non-members welcome to attend in person for £5.
