The Unlikeliest Hero of the HolocaustAn evening with journalist and author Ian Judson Wednesday 14 October 2026 | 6:30pm Postgraduate Medical Education Centre, Hull Join Hull Medical Society for a fascinating evening with journalist and newly published author Ian Judson, as he shares the remarkable story of his great-aunt, Sister Agnes (Clare) Walsh — affectionately known as Auntie Ada. A Daughter of Charity, Ada’s life took her from orphanages in revolutionary Ireland and Jerusalem to Nazi-occupied France, where she faced considerable personal danger while helping to shelter Jewish people following the German invasion in 1940. Ian’s book, Auntie Ada: The Unlikeliest Hero of the Holocaust, brings together historical research and a unique personal connection: Ian grew up knowing Ada himself. Through the talk, he will explore her life, the choices she made during an extraordinary period of history, and the legacy she left behind. Ian is now preparing to begin a PhD at the University of Leeds, where he will continue his research into Ada’s story and legacy. He is also working to expand the Holocaust Education Centre’s Beacon School initiative across Hull and the East Riding, having already delivered talks to schools on both sides of the Humber.
