Mappleton Walkshop with Louisa Chase

Accompanied by artist Zivarna Murphy, Louisa Chase leads a ‘walkshop’ in Mappleton, a place on the East Yorkshire coastline where Zivarna observes the erosion and loss of this landscape body as a metaphor for human loss. Louisa will guide us into embodied and non-extractive reciprocity with this particular territory and bio-region through deep listening. Building on previous occasions and spaces in which their work has been shown together, Louisa and Zivarna have imagined this walkshop as an embodied expansion of their ongoing conversation with a widening circle of human and more-than-human participants in this wild and liminal location. Zivarna Murphy hand-forms her tactile vessels from stoneware and porcelain, layered with eroded wild boulder clay and impressed shells, rocks and fossils, all gathered from this coastline, imbuing each piece with a strong sense of place and connection. Louisa Chase is a transdisciplinary artist, writer and researcher based in Lincolnshire. Her creative practice is grounded in walking and outdoor movement, and explores the interconnection between body and land, experiencing the physical body and wider earth body as active sites of knowledge and memory. She has a background in geography (University of Hull), environmental conservation, psychotherapy and somatic movement, and studied art in Aotearoa New Zealand. She has exhibited in public and private galleries in the UK and Aotearoa New Zealand and her work has been funded by Arts Council England, Artists Now and Create NE Lincs.
