Learn essential nutrition and food safety practices to support wellbeing, prevent risks, and deliver safe, quality care. This accredited course provides care staff with the knowledge and understanding required to support safe nutrition, hydration, and food safety practices within health and social care settings. Learners will explore the importance of balanced nutrition, safe food handling, dietary needs, and the role nutrition plays in maintaining health, wellbeing, dignity, and independence. The course supports staff to recognise nutritional risks, promote hydration, understand specialist dietary requirements, and follow food safety legislation and best practice to reduce risks such as foodborne illness, contamination, choking, and malnutrition. Designed for staff working in residential care, domiciliary care, supported living, healthcare, and community settings, the course promotes safe, person-centred approaches to nutrition and food safety. Learning Outcomes By the end of this accredited course, learners will be able to: • Explain the importance of nutrition and hydration in promoting health, wellbeing, recovery, and quality of life. • Identify the principles of a balanced diet and understand how nutritional needs may vary between individuals. • Recognise the signs and risks associated with poor nutrition, malnutrition, dehydration, and reduced food intake. • Understand how to support person-centred nutritional care while respecting dignity, preferences, culture, faith, and individual dietary needs. • Identify common specialist diets and understand how health conditions may affect eating, drinking, and nutritional requirements. • Recognise the risks associated with allergies, intolerances, choking, dysphagia, and texture-modified diets. • Demonstrate an understanding of safe food hygiene practices, including food preparation, storage, temperature control, and contamination prevention. • Explain the importance of infection prevention, personal hygiene, and environmental cleanliness in food safety. • Understand legal responsibilities, policies, and procedures relating to food safety in health and social care settings. • Promote safe, dignified, and positive mealtime experiences that support wellbeing, independence, and person-centred care. • Recognise when concerns relating to nutrition, hydration, or food safety should be reported or escalated.
