Compton Organ Concert - Kevin Grunill

Born in Barnsley in 1972, Kevin developed an interest in music from an early age and began learning the electronic organ at the age of twelve. Four years later, he discovered the distinctive sound of the theatre organ and began studying the instrument, developing a style specifically suited to its unique character. Before long, he was performing concerts throughout the country on both electronic and theatre organs. Kevin continued his musical education at performing arts college before studying music at Leeds University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) degree in 1994. He has since performed extensively throughout the UK, as well as in Holland and the USA. A major highlight came in 1997 when Kevin became resident organist at Blackpool North Pier, entertaining thousands of visitors. His time in Blackpool also gave him the opportunity to perform on the famous Wurlitzer in the Tower Ballroom. Kevin has also made an enormous contribution to the preservation of the theatre organ. In 1999 he founded the Penistone Cinema Organ Trust, becoming closely involved with the four-manual Compton now installed at the Penistone Paramount. His technical expertise has led to numerous restoration and installation projects, both in the UK and overseas, including the restoration and installation of the former Paramount Glasgow Compton in the USA. Since 2008, through Pennine Organ Services, Kevin has specialised in theatre pipe organ restoration, installation and consultancy. He has also played an important role in developing the Astoria Centre in Barnsley, home to a superb Compton organ and the National Theatre Organ Heritage & Restoration Centre. Kevin is passionate about encouraging the next generation of organists and has tutored numerous young players at the Astoria Centre, including Declan Poole and Lewis Scott, both former UK Young Theatre Organist of the Year winners. With his exceptional musicianship, extensive performing experience and deep knowledge of the theatre organ, Kevin promises a concert combining superb entertainment with a genuine appreciation of these remarkable instruments.
