Sudley House and Mossley Hill Church pre-Christmas visit and social

Join us for a tour of two fascinating Victorian properties and the opportunity to meet fellow enthusiasts for pre-Christmas refreshments. Sudley House, located in the leafy suburb of Mossley Hill in Liverpool, is a remarkable example of a 19th-century merchant’s home. This Grade II* listed building offers visitors a unique blend of Victorian architecture and fine art collections. The building was acquired by George Holt, the creator of the Lamport and Holt shipping Line. It was George Holt who developed the house and interior that we see today, one of the few period homes decorated in a Victorian style that still has many of its original features. It is also the only surviving merchant art collection still hanging in its original location. Featured pictures in the collection include those by Turner, Gainsborough, Constable, Millais, Rosetti and Edward Burne Jones. Mossley Hill Parish Church of 1870-75 designed by Paley and Austin is a Grade II* listed property. Pevsner’s book Buildings of England describes this as “One of the best Victorian Churches in Liverpool”. The interior is described as "majestic, with the centrepiece being the great crossing tower”. In between the tours of these two buildings, we will have a pre-Christmas get-together in the Mossley Hill Parish Church Hall, where refreshments will be provided. The Hall connects directly into the Church itself where we will complete the afternoon with a guided tour.
