‘A Dangerous Calling : 500 years of William Tyndale’s New Testament’

500 years ago William Tyndale achieved his goal – an English translation of the New Testament which everyone from ‘the boy who driveth the plough’ upwards could understand. He had to leave England to do this and he spent over 10 years evading the English King, the Catholic church and the Holy Roman Emperor. In October 1526 the Bishop of London had a bonfire in the churchyard of the Medieval Cathedral of St Paul – burning copies of that 1526 New Testament. Only 3 survived the flames, and one is in an exhibition in the Cathedral’s Triforium Library. ‘A Dangerous Calling : 500 years of William Tyndale’s New Testament’ https://www.stpauls.co.uk/tyndale The exhibition is in the Cathedral’s Triforium Library and is included in a ‘Treasures Tour’. This is a call out for a London Historians visit to the Cathedral on the 9th October to take in that exhibition The Group will initially meet at the statue of Queen Anne at the West Front of St Paul’s. The tour will start at the Information desk on the Cathedral Floor with a basic introduction to St Paul’s. We will then climb 141 steps to the Triforium for a tour of this area which includes the model Wren had built as one of his designs in 1670, a view from the top of the Geometric staircase and the Library to see the William Tyndale Exhibition ‘A Dangerous Calling’. This should take around an hour and a half – finishing at around midday. After the Treasures Tour you can continue climbing to the Whispering, Stone and Golden galleries if you wish. There will also be the option of an afternoon 60 minute tour of the Cathedral floor – visiting the Geometric staircase, the Quire and the American Chapel Or, if you prefer to make your own way around the Cathedral you can use one of the Cathedral’s multi media guides Your ticket price includes entry to the Cathedral (£24 value), Treasures Tour, Guided Tour/Multi Media Guide and access to Galleries.
