Cult film night BAR TRASH continues our 14th sensational season — TRASH PLANET 3: APOCALYPSE! — with our second tribute to Tim Curry, FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST (1992). “Just beyond your dreams lives a secret world. Where every tree is a home. Every sound is a song. And humans exist only in fairy tails. Until now…” Way before AVATAR there was this Don Bluth-esque animated musical rainforest romp with a star-studded cast including Tim Curry, Christian Slater, Samantha Mathis, Robin Williams, and Tone-Loc. Based on the stories by Diana Young, FERNGULLY is about a courageous forest fairy who “gives her all” to defend her home. One of the most Nineties movies of all time, this vibrantly hand-drawn animation features cassette players, mullets and enough queer-coding to snuggle up with SHE-RA and the other Princesses of Power. Tim Curry plays Hexxus, an ancient, malevolent spirit of destruction, pollution, and ecocide. Voice acting gave Tim a third major strand to his amazing career after appearing on stage and screen (his post Rocky Horror career as a rock star didn’t quite take off as he’d hoped…). He relished the freedom to play ever-more absurd characters amongst insanely talented cast lineups, and continued to perform for animation and video games after his stroke in 2012.
