Celebrating the London Housing Design Guide

An evening of talks exploring the development and impact of the LHDG with Alex Ely, Fenna Haakma Wagenaar, Jo McCafferty and Richa Mukhia. The London Housing Design Guide (LHDG) which was launched in 2010 was commissioned by the office of the Mayor of London and the London Development Agency (LDA). Over the last 16 years the Guide has had a huge impact on a generation of new homes in the capital. It is now something that everybody here in London takes for granted. Many are too young to even know how it originated, its ambition & what the situation was like before; and few will be aware of the process, the politics & the context then in which it was developed. It was a moment in London’s recent history which recast the way housing was regulated and designed, with huge effect on London’s building stock, and to a certain extent housing standards throughout the UK. This evening of talks will celebrate the development and impact of the guide on the capital and further afield in the Netherlands where it inspired new legislation. This is the first event for the newly established RIBA London Housing group. Speakers: Jo McCafferty, a Director of Levitt Bernstein and co-author of “The Housing Design Handbook: A Guide to Good Practice”, will talk about the 100-year history of London housing standards prior to the LHDG Richa Mukhia, today Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster, Editor and Project Lead for the LHDG at Design for London (DfL) from 2008 to 2011 will set out the policy context and DfL’s ambition for the Guide Alex Ely, Director of Stirling Prize-winning mæ architects, will talk about the Guide itself and how it was developed. Fenna Haakma Wagenaar, today Design Lead Ruimte & Duurzaamheid (Space & Sustainability) at the Gemeente Amsterdam, who worked alongside Richa at DfL during the development of the Guide will bring a European perspective and reflect on its influence abroad. The event is open to all RIBA members, registered Architects, policy makers, councils, politicians, academics and everybody involved in the provision of housing, in particular affordable housing in London.
