House of Lords - The Missing Rung: AI and the Route into Work

AI is not competing with the experienced expert. It is competing with the person who was going to become one. Employment for 22 to 25 year olds in the occupations most exposed to AI has fallen by roughly 19 percent since late 2022, on payroll records rather than surveys. In the same occupations, employment for older workers rose. UK graduate schemes are down about a third. Nobody has offered a convincing explanation yet that is not linked to AI. Every profession on this panel runs on an apprenticeship: the trainee seat, the year in practice, the studio crit. All of them are now automating the routine work that apprenticeship was made of, while assuming the experts will carry on appearing. Four professionals, chaired, and they do not all agree with each other. The event will open with someone currently trying to get that first job, because a panel about young people with nobody young on it misses the point completely.
