3 interconnecting galleries house 3 individual exhibitions curated by 2 artists/curators for each colour Red, Green and Blue. ASC exhibitions director Darren Obrien idea was to see 3 independent exhibitions come together with a simple idea with 2 curators for each. For Red we have Katie Pratt and Raksha Patel and Green we have Scott McCracken and Pia Ortuno. For Blue there is Michael Coppelov and Magdalena Glusak-Holeksa. Each exhibition explores its own selection, touching on a history of cultural colour association , of Freudian connotation, of politics and gender and also pigment. RED/ Cristallina Fischetti, Danying Chen, Hannah Knox, Alex Veness, Allyson Keehan, Cathy Lomax, Howard Rogers, Katie Pratt, Laura White, Michael Ajerman, Raksha Patel, Richard ORussa, Sohrab Crews, Clare Chapman, Umar Ahmed, Uzma Sultan, Rosemary Cronin, Yu Xiao, Ritu Sood, Sara Kate Wilson and Anish Kapoor. Green/ Alice Wilson, Dan Hays, Diana Puntar, Dieter Durinck, Helen Clarke, Kes Richardson, Tom Palin, Oliver Hoffmeister, Pia Ortuno, Samuel Dominguez, Scott McCracken and Shaan Syed. Blue/ Magdalena Gluszak- Holeksha, Michael Coppelov, Adam Hennessey, Kaler Q Huang, Alastair Gordon, Jude Wainwright, Ella Reid, Ana Milenkovic, Kristian Evju, Iain Andrews and Karolina Albricht. The magic of modern technology and its use of RGB goes back to the history of modern ideas on colour. For example in 1861 James Clerk Maxwell combined 3 separate colour slides of one image. One Red, one Green and one Blue. The result was what the human eye would see as a early colour photograph. In fact in the late 18th century physicist Thomas Young suggested the reason for these 3 primary colours was that the human eye had 3 different wave length dependant cells. Identifying these cells took another century yet today we have only partial answers. Human perception of colour has much to do with learnt behaviour of colour interpretation and context as it has with the spectra of light. RGB at the Handbag Factory is 3 separate exhibitions each showing contemporary artwork that tell their own story with its its own interpretations on Red ,Green and Blue.
