Full description from organizerShow less
Across moving image, costume, photography and material experimentation, Zheng examines processes of transformation in which apparent states of completion, stability or disappearance give way to further possibilities. Human hair, detached from the body, becomes a site of material enquiry; a tear, preserved in crystalline form, reveals structures ordinarily imperceptible to the eye; the body, moving through changing landscapes, registers an ongoing negotiation with its surroundings. These works consider how matter is shaped, displaced and reconfigured, questioning the distinctions between the living and the inanimate, the transient and the enduring, the discarded and the renewed. The exhibition also traces a development in the artist's methodology, from the articulation of philosophical questions through visual form towards a more materially grounded practice informed by experimentation and research. The movement between conceptual enquiry and practical investigation is central to this process. Ideas encounter the constraints of materials and techniques; unexpected results prompt revisions; and the limits of one approach become the conditions for another. Construction, dissolution and reorganisation operate both as subjects within the works and as principles through which the practice itself evolves. The title Still Life evokes a productive tension between stasis and change. What appears fixed remains subject to transformation, while processes of decay, separation and renewal resist any final state. By attending to these conditions, Zheng's work considers regeneration not as a simple return to an original form, but as a process through which matter acquires new configurations and meanings. The exhibition holds these enquiries open, approaching uncertainty not as an obstacle to resolution, but as an integral condition of artistic and material research. Its works mark provisional points within a continuing process of inquiry, in which each conclusion retains the possibility of becoming a beginning. As T. S. Eliot wrote, "The end is where we start from." Uncertainty is an inevitable part of life. Still Life brings these moments together, while the exploration itself continues beyond the exhibition. Danlu Zheng is a London-based multidisciplinary artist and a graduate of Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Her practice explores the relationships between human existence, the natural environment and material transformation, with a particular interest in the cycles of construction, destruction and reorganisation. Working across moving image, performance, costume and material experimentation, she combines visual storytelling with research-led artistic practice. Her work investigates how bodies and materials change over time, while questioning the relationship between human activity, natural processes and the possibilities of sustainable material innovation.
