Fostering Connection for Couples: Ageing and Mortality in Primary Care

An APPPS Primary Care Group seminar exploring the emotional support needed to sustain relationships through ageing, dementia and later life. How might we understand the emotional supports needed to sustain relationships through later life – a time when they may be most in need of attention and support, yet so often are missing from view in health and social care? Join the APPPS Primary Care Group for this seminar with Dr Andrew Balfour, CEO of Tavistock Relationships, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Adult and Couples Psychotherapist. Dr Balfour will draw on themes from his research into relationships in dementia and his recent book, Life and Death: Our Relationship with Ageing, Dementia, and Other Fates of Time. The seminar will explore the impact of age-related illnesses such as dementia and consider the relationship opportunities and challenges of later life. It will also consider the importance of emotional contact and containment, and of being accompanied, internally and externally, through the journey of later life and dying.
