Kalam Workshop: Introduction to Public Speaking

A welcoming workshop for beginners: learn to organise your ideas, speak clearly and take your first steps with Kalam. Have something to say, but find it difficult to say it in front of other people? You do not have to be naturally outgoing to become a good speaker. Public speaking is a skill you can learn, and getting started is easier when you have a supportive place to practise. Join Kalam for an introductory workshop designed for people who are not used to speaking in public. We will explore how to organise a short contribution, make your point clearly and deliver it in a way an audience can follow. The emphasis is on taking manageable first steps and building confidence through practice. What to expect • An introduction to the foundations of clear public speaking. • Simple ways to structure your ideas and get your main point across. • Practical approaches to preparation, nerves and delivery. • Short speaking exercises and supportive feedback, using topics relevant to participants’ interests. Who is it for? This workshop is for beginners: people who hesitate to contribute in meetings, feel nervous addressing a group, or have had few opportunities to practise. It is aimed primarily at Muslims and creates space to explore barriers participants may face, including feeling that their perspective is misunderstood or worrying about representing their community. You do not need to speak on behalf of anyone else to develop your own voice. People of every faith and none are welcome. About Kalam Kalam is an initiative dedicated to developing public speaking skills within the Muslim community. We believe there is a need for more skilled voices, capable of articulating ideas and thinking critically, as British Muslims navigate the complex issues they encounter in 21st-century Britain. Our monthly workshops combine practical skills with questions relevant to our community. They are a chance to meet new people, explore new ideas and grow as speakers in a welcoming environment. Our aim is to uphold a high standard of argument and respectful discussion while leaving room for genuine disagreement. Saturday 14 November 2026. Antalya Restaurant.
