Material Entanglements

An interactive performance exploring how we might imagine alternative futures through the intelligence of mycelium. machinaloci space is pleased to host Material Entanglements, an interactive performance exploring how we might imagine alternative futures through the intelligence of mycelium — the underground fungal networks that sustain collective life. Using cotton crochet yarns to make these underground fungal networks tangible, an immersive environment is created that slowly unravels and reconfigures through movement, sound, and encounter. The performance centres on improvisation through a series of movement and sound scores that unfold through relationships between the bodies and the yarns, creating a live experience that shifts in response to the collective atmosphere of the room. Throughout 40 minutes, 10 cotton crochet yarns are unravelled across the space, forming a shifting web that audiences are invited to sit with. Participation is open and gentle: people may choose to witness quietly, interact with the threads, or move through the evolving environment. Cushions and chairs can be provided to support different access needs. Material Engagements is led by Manuela Albrecht and machinaloci space Fellow, Franziska Böhm.
