Reframing Monumentality: Contemporary Sculptural Practices in Public Realm

Join us for the London Sculpture Week Symposium exploring what monumentality means in the 21st century. Now in its third edition, the London Sculpture Week Symposium, Reframing Monumentality: Contemporary Sculptural Practices in the Public Realm, brings together artists, curators and cultural partners to explore the evolving meaning of monumentality in the 21st century. Moving beyond associations with scale, permanence and authority, we’ll consider how contemporary sculpture responds to contested histories, shifting civic identities, ecological pressures and digitally mediated experience. The afternoon brings together perspectives from across London’s public art landscape, with further speakers to be announced. • Özlem Gunyol & Mustafa Kunt in conversation with Fatoş Üstek (Curator, Frieze Sculpture) • Jo Baxendale (Fourth Plinth, Greater London Authority) • Mahtab Hussain in conversation with Sarah Carrington (Director, The Line) • Hannah Starkey in conversation with Stella Ioannou (Artistic Director, Sculpture in the City and Founding Director, LACUNA) The sessions will be moderated by Dr Jacek Ludwig Scarso (CREATURE [Research Centre for Creative Arts, Cultures and Engagement] at London Metropolitan University). The symposium is pay what you can, with a recommended donation of £5. Your contribution helps support the delivery of future London Sculpture Week events. Access Information • The symposium will take place in the auditorium on the ground floor of The Warburg Institute. • There is a permanent ramp positioned to the right-hand side of the main entrance. • A designated disabled parking space is available immediately outside the Institute. • The auditorium has flat access and the space is designed to be wheelchair accessible. • A disabled toilet is available near the auditorium entrance. • BSL interpretation is not available for this event due to limited resources.
