Full description from organizer

Explore why ordinary tasks feel hard, how boredom and effort build attention and resilience, and what instant solutions may change. When it comes to laundry, as an adult, you encounter the Sisyphean task of folding it. And as it sits in your machine you realise that merely thinking about it won't lead to it being folded up. Why can something as simple as replying to an email, doing the washing up or sticking with a repetitive task sometimes feel surprisingly difficult? In this Mind Circles Talk, Charchita Mishra explores what boredom, repetition and everyday effort can teach us about attention, persistence and resilience. Drawing on neuroscience, psychology, sport, literature and popular culture, the session will look at why the mind is often drawn towards novelty and stimulation, what happens when a task feels unrewarding or monotonous, and why learning to stay with discomfort may be an important part of building psychological resilience. The talk will also consider a very current question: as instant solutions, automation and AI become more embedded in everyday life, could we be reducing some of the ordinary opportunities we have to practise patience, effort and sustained attention? Rather than treating boredom as something that always needs to be escaped, Charchita will invite us to reconsider what it might offer. Together, we’ll explore questions such as: • Why do ordinary or repetitive tasks sometimes feel so difficult to begin? • What influences our ability to sustain attention when something is not immediately rewarding? • How might boredom and effort help us practise persistence? • What role does discomfort play in resilience? • Could our growing reliance on instant solutions change the way we engage with effort? • How can we approach the less exciting parts of life with greater curiosity and intention? This is an accessible, thought-provoking exploration of why the mundane may matter more than we think — and what everyday effort can teach us about attention, adaptability and resilience. No previous knowledge of neuroscience or psychology is required. Just curiosity. Having dissected brains, she is able to understand the human brain and everyone's day-to-day worries a little more now. In this ever changing world where everyone wants to stand out but feels like they're being swallowed in the hustle and bustle of London. She delivers a 101 rundown on how to feel less like a squeezed out lemon or a cramped in like a sardine within a tin on the train. Learn to enjoy the long route and dwell in the moment. Like the Hippocratic oath, show you that there indeed is art to science; and how to find the beauty in the everyday mundane as well as figure out the science behind it.
