Great Northern Section: Celebrating Cask Beer

Join the Great Northern Section for an informal evening at Runaway Brewery, bringing together brewers, industry professionals and those passionate about cask beer. Taking a break from the traditional conference format, the evening will focus on open conversation rather than presentations. Beer writer Matthew Curtis and illustrator David Bailey will lead a discussion and Q&A, drawing on their experience in the cask beer sector. The event is ideal for brewers at all stages of their careers, as well as anyone working in or passionate about cask beer. Speakers Matthew Curtis is an award-winning beer writer, photographer, and a leading voice on UK beer and pub culture. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of Pellicle, named beer publication of the year by the British Guild of Beer Writers in 2025. Matthew has written extensively on the evolution of British beer, including authoring Modern British Beer and Manchester's Best Beer, Pubs and Bars for CAMRA. A passionate advocate for cask ale, his work regularly explores its cultural importance, the role of pubs, and the need to protect and champion real ale in today’s brewing landscape. David Bailey is a valued Manchester-based illustrator specialising in bold, hand-drawn illustration and lettering across beer, branding and editorial. A regular contributor to Pellicle, he is well known for his comic series Just Beer Things, which captures the humour and quirks of modern beer culture. His work has appeared across breweries, pubs and publications, bringing personality and accessibility to the industry. With a strong affinity for pubs and cask ale, David’s work often celebrates the traditions and everyday moments that make British beer culture unique.
