The Proud Place: Guided Tour and The Story of Manchester's LGBT+ Centre

Join us for a guided tour of Manchester's LGBTQ+ history and delve into the amazing story of The Proud Place community centre. Manchester LGBT Centre: History and Building Tour This combined walking and building tour explores the remarkable story behind Manchester's LGBT+ Centre, from the political campaigns and community activism that made it possible to the award-winning building that serves the community today. We begin with a heritage walking tour through the city centre, tracing the political, economic and social history that led Manchester to become one of the first cities in Europe to develop a publicly funded, purpose-built centre for the LGBT+ community. Following the journey from the Town Hall through Canal Street and onwards to Sidney Street, we will explore the partnerships, campaigns and community action that transformed an ambitious idea into a lasting reality. The story is one of determination and resilience in the face of public funding challenges, political opposition and changing attitudes. Along the way, we will uncover how local communities, activists and public bodies worked together over several decades to create a permanent home for LGBT organisations and services, reflecting wider changes in public policy, equality and community development. The walking tour concludes at The Proud Place, situated within one of Manchester's most diverse urban blocks, alongside faith organisations, community groups, independent businesses and social enterprises. Building architect Ste Garlik will then lead visitors on a tour of the building itself, offering insight into the vision, design process and architectural features of the Centre. Participants will learn how the building was conceived to support inclusion, wellbeing and community connection, and how its spaces were shaped in collaboration with the organisations and people who use it. The Ground Up cafe at The Proud Place will be open for those who want to grab a coffee or lunch. Together, the walking and building tour provide a unique opportunity to understand both the history and the physical creation of one of Manchester's most significant community buildings.
