Workshop: Molas and Reverse Applique

Mola Workshop – make a Mola Christmas angel ! Mola Workshop – make a Mola Christmas Angel A Mola is a pictorial blouse created by the Cuna women of the San Blas islands of Panama. The technique used to create these wonderful colourful textiles is a form of reverse applique. In this workshop you will study Molas from the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection and from the workshop leader’s own collection before you get the opportunity to try the Reverse Applique technique for yourself. One of the Molas in the GTC collection features two musical angels facing each other – one plays the trumpet, and the other plays a saxophone. We will be creating a version of the trumpet playing angel. The tutor will demonstrate the process, show examples of the work in progress, give help at every stage of the process and provide detailed written instructions for you to follow. The stitching required for this project is simple so the workshop is suitable for all levels of skill. All materials will be provided but you may want to bring along your own sewing kit (scissors, needles, etc.) if you have one. The workshop will be led by Bev Lamey. Until recently Bev was the Community Engagement Officer at GTC and was previously a Principal Lecturer in Fashion & Textiles at the University of Lancashire where she was course leader for the MA Surface Pattern and Textiles. Bev has run numerous workshops for GTC and has experience of teaching a variety of textiles techniques. On the Day Please make sure to arrive between 9.45am for a prompt 10.00am start. One of our team will meet you at Reception, in the building just next to Brierfield Railway Station, and will direct you through to our Studio where the workshop will take place. Please note that reception will only be staffed from 9.45am onwards so if you arrive before this you will not be able to enter early. If you arrive early there is an onsite coffee shop where you may wish to relax and purchase refreshments. Refreshments A selection of hot and cold drinks will be available for you to have during a refreshment break and are included in the price of the workshop. If you wish to have lunch on site after the study visit you can visit the onsite coffee shop Black Sheep Coffee which sells a range of drinks, sandwiches and snacks. The Venue This event will take place at Gawthorpe Textiles Collection’s venue at Northlight House, a converted textile mill in Brierfield, Lancashire. There is step-free access from the street or car park to our Studio but please be aware there are areas of the car park which have significant slope to them.
