What happens after an exhibition or project ends? How do artists build sustainable art practices, find genuinely supportive relationships and continue to make work they believe in? Join Dr Susan Jones and special invited artists for a conversation inspired by her independent research study Artists’ lives: ecologies for resilience. Together, they’ll explore artists’ approaches to and experiences of sustaining artistic practices including how communities and infrastructures enable artists to survive and thrive and why direct support to artists is essential to a healthy society. Bringing together artists, producers and cultural leaders, this discussion explores what it really takes for artists to live flourishing lives. Dr Susan Jones will be joined with Matthew Burrows and Lydia Catterall. Matthew Burrows' painting practice explores relationships between movement, stillness and the sacred. He founded the Artist Support Pledge in 2020 in response to the pandemic's impacts on artists and was later awarded an MBE. Reflecting his commitment to the artistic community, mutual support and sustainable creative ecologies, he is lead mentor for the Turps Off Site mentoring programme in Margate. Artist, writer and social activist, Lydia Catterall splits her time between Leeds and Birmingham. She listens, writes, maps and co-creates, all her work driven by big questions and the complexity of hearing them, as artists and human beings. https://substack.com/@lydiacatterall
