Making human, animal and mythic mini masks with Drew Caines

Let your creativity run free discovering masks and mark making on this one day workshop with Drew Caines. About Drew: I’m a ceramic artist who has been playing with clay since the mid 90s but I’ve also been an illustrator, graphic and multimedia designer. I like to mix up influences from the distant past right through to the current day. I’m probably best known for black clay folkloric inspired sculptures with rich, intensely detailed and layered surfaces. Pattern, detail and texture are my happy places. I exhibit in galleries across the UK and the USA including recently the National Glass Centre in Sunderland and ongoing at Brightwater Gallery in Alnwick and Gallery Ergo in Seattle. In this workshop, first you will learn how to make a hump mould as the basis for making whatever type of mask you want. Secondly I’ll take you through the process I use to make my mini masks. Covering things like how to make human, animal and mythic creature masks. As well as how to create textures like fur and wood. Finally you will make a mask of your own choice and I’ll work individually with all workshop attendees to help them understand the best way to realise their idea and to achieve the best possible result. At the end of the day you can either take your pieces away to fire yourself or we can fire them at the studio to stoneware temps. No glaze. Pieces will be ready to pick up around 3-4 weeks later.
