Most Honorable Son Film Screening

To launch the Tuna Canyon Exhibition, this film screening by Bill Kubota explores the life of Japanese American WW2 airman Ben Kuroki Most Honorable Son tells the story of Ben Kuroki, the first Japanese American war hero. Director Bill Kubota charts Kuroki's historic, controversial journey from the day Pearl Harbor was attacked to the atomic bombings of Japan. In addition to the screening, Kubota will both introduce and engage in a Q&A. Bill Kubota has produced, written, directed and lensed local, regional and national documentaries for broadcast since the 1980s. His national projects include co-producing the Dupont Columbia Journalism award-winning “Beyond the Light Switch” series for Detroit PBS. He directed the PBS documentary “The Ethanol Effect” for Detroit PBS. With his production company KDN Films, he directed “Lustron: The House America’s Been Waiting For” working with Ohio State University Public Television and the primetime national network broadcast of “Most Honorable Son” presented by PBS and NET Nebraska. His work has also appeared on PBS News Hour, ABC News, CBS News and ESPN. He’s worked as a producer, photographer, on-air reporter and news assignment manager for television stations in Lansing, Flint and Detroit. He’s currently working on short films looking at the major issues facing Detroit. 07 Dec New exhibit opening in the United Kingdom “When the United States entered World War II on December 7, 1941, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies began arresting Japanese, German, and Italian immigrant community leaders who were seen as threats to national security. This was done in response to three Presidential Proclamations which derived their authority from the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. In addition, because of agreements with Latin American governments, thousands of men, women, and children from eighteen countries were sent to internment camps in the United States. Over the course of the war, a total of about 16,800 Japanese,11,000 Germans, and 3,300 Italians were incarcerated in accordance with these Presidential Proclamations.” President Kyoko Nancy Oda said, “The exhibit is our educational outreach that will be accessible to a whole new global audience. We are bringing a large collection of virtual programs to accompany the exhibit. The goal of the Tuna Canyon exhibition is to remember the 2000 men and some women detained just fourteen miles from city hall. Although, we have been awarded Los Angeles City Historic Cultural Monument 1039 there is no monument or place to reflect on the injustices that occurred then and even today.
