Juice on the Loose- extracting juices by steaming, scratting and pressing

Practical workshop teaching methods for extracting fruit juices for storage- covering steam juicing, scratting, pressing and pasteurisation. If it's a good fruit year, we often so much fruit by now that we can squeeze it out and drink it! We'll show you multiple methods for extracting and pasteurising fruit juice from in-season fruits such as apples, pears, plums and grapes. You can bring along any excess fruit of your own to run through our high powered scratter and hand-cranked apple press, and we'll have a go at steam juicing too. We'll talk about how to select fruit for juicing and long term storage, and how to avoid mould or impurities in the juice. There will be plenty of juice to drink, and snacks to accompany. We are likely to be based mostly in our preserving kitchen, but we may also harvest some fruit in the orchard. We may encounter wasps and bees so please let us know if you have any allergies. This workshop is part of our continuing seasonal abundance programme. Throughout this series we have been sharing skills on all things related to food growing, foraging and food processing and preserving. Thanks to a subsidy from Sustainable Hockerton, there is a 25% discount for anyone in NG25, but the workshop series is of course to anyone travelling from further away as well.
