The Hidden Compass Trio is a London-based string trio exploring the rich and colourful world of music for violin, viola and cello. The Hidden Compass Trio is a London-based string trio exploring the rich and colourful world of music for violin, viola and cello. Originally formed in 2019, the trio regularly performs at the National Gallery, where they have become affectionately known as the “Gallery Trio.” Passionate about discovering exciting and unexpected repertoire, the trio brings together works that spark the imagination and evoke places, pictures and stories. Their programmes move between the familiar and the new, from the elegance and energy of Beethoven to the atmospheric music of Jean Cras and Kodály, alongside original works written especially for the trio by their cellist, Nina Plapp. This concert takes you on a musical journey from Beethoven through the twentieth century and into the present day, exploring music that paints pictures, conjures landscapes and invites the imagination to wander. The Musicians Rita – Violin Rita began playing the violin at the age of nine and went on to study as a music scholar at Wells Cathedral School before receiving a full scholarship to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where she gained her Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance. She has performed as a soloist with the Welsh Symphonia, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra and Wells Virtuosi, and has taken part in masterclasses with renowned violinists including James Ehnes, Lin Yao Ji and So-Ock Kim. An active chamber musician, Rita has performed at numerous festivals and venues including Symphony Hall, Birmingham, and has recently completed her Master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Joshua Fisher. Anastasia Sofina – Viola Anastasia Sofina is a Moscow-born violist and graduate of the Royal College of Music, where she studied with Jonathan Barritt as a scholar, having previously studied at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory. A laureate of 15 international competitions, she has performed widely across Europe and Russia in venues including Wigmore Hall and Cadogan Hall, and has appeared with numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles. A passionate chamber musician, Anastasia has collaborated with leading artists including Frans Helmerson, Alexander Rudin and Radovan Vlatković, and is a member of the prize-winning Rolton Trio and Clara String Quartet. Nina Plapp – Cello Nina Plapp is a cellist and composer, born on the Isle of Wight and working in London. She studied at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, including with renowned cellist Alexander Boyarsky, and has developed a career combining performance, chamber music and composition. A regular performer and composer at the National Gallery, Nina writes original music for the Hidden Compass Trio, inspired by her fascination with music that evokes images, places and stories.
