Japanese Sumi-e ink painting workshop for a small group up to 6 people Sumi-e Japanese Ink Painting Workshop – Maple Winchester | Small Group Session Event Details Date: Saturday 28 November 2026 Time: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM Location: The Yard Studios, Matley's Yard, Wharf Hill, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9NQ Fee: £45 (includes all materials) Age Requirement: 16+ Group Size: Max. 6 participants About this Event Join artist Junko O'Neill for a relaxing, hands-on introduction to Sumi-e, or Suibokuga—the traditional Japanese art of ink wash painting. In this three-hour workshop, you'll explore the theme of Maple learning how to express the essence of the subject through minimal, elegant brushwork, thoughtful composition, and the use of negative space. You'll work with traditional materials—black ink, handmade brushes, ink stone, and sumi stick—and be guided through each step in a calm and focused environment. This session is ideal for beginners, with no previous experience required. Workshop Content • A brief introduction to the origins and philosophy of Sumi-e • How to prepare your own ink using an ink stone and sumi stick • How to hold and control the brush for various mark-making styles • Foundational brushstroke techniques and practice • Guided step-by-step painting of the theme • How to approach painting mindfully, with simplicity and intention What’s Included • Friendly, step-by-step instruction and demonstration • Use of all traditional tools and materials • A completed Sumi-e artwork to take home • Small group format (max. 6 participants) for plenty of personal guidance • Optional purchase of materials available after the session Materials All tools and materials are provided. A small selection of tools will also be available to purchase at the end of the workshop, if you'd like to continue practising at home.
