FREE River Litter Pick - Hawley Meadows, Camberley

Join the Blackwater Valley Country Partership, for a FREE bankside litter pick on this part of the River Blackwater. Join us: • Conduct a litter pick to help the local wildlife as well as improve the community areas for all to enjoy. What you'll gain: Practical conservation skills, hands-on experience in countryside management, and the satisfaction of making a visible difference to your local river. Plus, you'll meet other people passionate about protecting nature. It’s a great way to meet people, get some fresh air, and give back to nature. No experience needed – just bring energy, sturdy boots and clothes you don't mind getting dirty! • However, as a heavily urban river, the Wandle suffers from many ecological pressures. A widespread and very visible issue is litter and rubbish pollution. • Litter and rubbish is not only unsightly but cumulatively can have a very damaging and long lasting effect on the health of the watercourse. • Animals like fish and birds mistake rubbish for food and ingest items, including micro plastics which move up the food chain. Animals also get entangled in plastic leading to injury or death. • Rubbish breaks down very slowly with dangerous chemicals and heavy metals leaching into the water, reducing water quality for wildlife as well as people. • The good news is that a lot of this litter is a solvable problem and this is where we need your help! Join us........ • SERT is working with Blackwater Valley Country Partnership to improve the River Blackwater through Hawley Meadows. What you need to know: 🕒 When: Thursday 24th September 2026, 10am-12pm 📍Where to meet: Hawley Meadows, Campion Cl, Blackwater, Camberley GU17 9DU • Google map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/G9pnYepv1swTzz3J8 • What 3 words: ///muddy.compounds.songbird • Nearest station: Frimley- 30 min walk 🚗 Parking: Parking is available at the park. 👉 Booking is essential so we can plan tools and work safely. ⏰ Booking closes at midnight, Tuesday 22nd September. What do you need to bring? • Packed lunch. • Water bottle (filled up and we have water available). • Reusable coffee cup if you have one. • Weather appropriate clothing (including long sleeves and trousers as there are nettles around). • Wear clothes you don't mind getting a bit dirty. We will provide tea, coffee, biscuits and light refreshments throughout the day. We will provide gloves and other PPE you will need, if you have sturdy gloves you can bring your own. We will also provide all tools needed. Accessibility: If you have any questions about access or physical requirements, please get in touch before the event. Under 18? For the Litter Pick all ages are welcome though under 16 year olds will need to be accompanied by someone over 18 years old and 16 or 17 year olds who are coming without a parent/guardian will need adult consent.
