A Supper of Stories: Winter Solstice

Gather around the table for a winter supper of seasonal food and stories as we welcome the returning light. A Supper of Stories: Winter Solstice is an in-person event to gather, share stories, and mark the winter. As the days grow shorter and the nights draw in, join us at Butts Green Garden Centre for an intimate seasonal supper celebrating the lead-up to the Winter Solstice — a time traditionally associated with reflection, gathering and the return of the light. Hosted on the covered decking, this supper club brings people together around a seasonal vegetarian menu inspired by the winter landscape and seasonal ingredients. Each course celebrates winter's richness and the simple pleasure of sharing food. The Menu A Winter Warmer A rich, nourishing vegetable broth infused with winter herbs, created to warm the bones on a winter's evening. From the Garden Warm pearl barley with roasted winter pears and celeriac, cavolo nero, toasted hazelnuts and sharp pickled red onion, finished with garden herbs and crumbled goat's cheese. The One-Pot Slow-cooked butter beans, hearty winter root vegetables and garden herb stew. A Sweet Ending Spiced apple cake with honeyed crème fraîche. Throughout the evening, poets and artists will share works exploring themes of winter, folklore, landscape, and the turning of the year. Performers will be announced on the evening, adding an element of surprise to the night's celebrations. As daylight fades and the evening unfolds, guests are invited to slow down, share conversation and enjoy an evening of food, storytelling and community. A note on the setting This will be a partially outdoor event, hosted on the decking at Butts Green. While we will have a log burner, hot water bottles and cosy touches to keep guests comfortable, please come prepared for the winter weather. We strongly recommend bringing plenty of warm layers and a blanket to wrap up in, so you can settle in and enjoy the evening. The Winter Solstice Edition continues a series of seasonal suppers, bringing together local artists, creatives and the wider community to celebrate the rhythm of the year through food and shared experiences.
