Southend CineScene Presents : Carol

In 1950s New York, a young photographer falls for an older woman trapped in an unhappy marriage, risking everything for love. Step into the beautifully atmospheric world of 1950s New York this December with Carol, Todd Haynes’ acclaimed romantic drama. Set against the glittering department stores, snowy streets and festive bustle of New York at Christmas, Carol follows Therese Belivet, a young aspiring photographer who meets Carol Aird, an elegant woman whose marriage is beginning to unravel. A chance encounter during the Christmas shopping rush develops into an intimate and life-changing connection. From Carol’s immaculate wardrobe and Therese’s understated style to the vintage cars, department stores and softly lit interiors, the film is a sumptuous portrait of mid-century New York. Every frame evokes the textures, colours and elegance of the era, creating a world that feels both glamorous and deeply intimate. As the two women grow closer, they find themselves drawn into a romance that challenges the expectations of the world around them. With its wintry landscapes, period glamour and unforgettable score, Carol captures both the magic and melancholy of the season. Based on Patricia Highsmith’s celebrated novel The Price of Salt, the film is a tender story of love, longing and the courage to choose your own happiness. Join Southend CineScene this December for an evening of mid-century New York glamour, winter atmosphere and one of cinema’s most beautifully realised romances.
