Shakespeare in Focus: Richard II

A three-week course with Rebecca Brown. Monday 21st September - Monday 5th October 2026, 10.00 a.m. - 12 noon Booking will close on Friday 18th September 2026 at 12 noon. Richard II tells the story of an anointed King who must redefine himself when forced to yield up his royal identity. What kind of self remains when his life-long role is taken away? Richard is made to suffer for his mistakes and learns that ‘love … Is a strange brooch in this all-hating world’. The play is famous for its richly imaginative and resonant poetry. We will study the language, imagery and characterization and, with the help of film clips, see how it works in performance. Participants are asked to have read the play in advance and to have a copy with them in the sessions. Tutor: Rebecca Brown Before moving to Scotland, Rebecca worked for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, in Stratford upon Avon, where she organized and taught courses on Shakespeare and the literature of his time to a wide range of students, young and old, including many from British and international universities. She often worked in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the University of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Institute. In recent years, Rebecca has taught courses for the Continuing Education programmes of the universities of Dundee and St Andrews.
