An evening with Carolyn Morgan: Copperopolis and the Swansea Cape Horners

A talk with Author Carolyn Morgan about the Swansea Cape Horners and her historical novel, Copperopolis. In the late 1800s Swansea was the copper-smelting capital of the world.But the best copper ore was in Chile, so Swansea copper barques had to sail around Cape Horn.With storms, massive waves and icebergs, this was a serious test of seamanship, and Cape Horners were revered for their skills.Carolyn Morgan's great great grandfather was a skipper on the copper trade, and inspired her historical novel, Copperopolis.She will share her research on the challenges faced on this eight-month journey, with only charts, a sextant and chronometer.
