How Do We Monitor Mammals We Rarely See?

Mammal Acoustics: From F-PODs to BatBugs Join Cornwall Mammal Group for an evening exploring how sound can reveal the hidden lives of mammals, from porpoises and dolphins in our coastal waters to bats flying overhead. How do we monitor mammals that we rarely see? We are delighted to welcome Nick Tregenza from Chelonia Ltd, the inventor of the F-POD, to talk about the development and application of passive acoustic monitoring technology. Nick will introduce the F-POD system, which is used to detect and monitor echolocating porpoises, dolphins and other toothed whales, before looking ahead to Chelonia’s new BatBug devices for long-term acoustic monitoring of bats. The talk will explore how these devices detect and select animal calls in real time, the opportunities and challenges of monitoring mammals acoustically, and what new technology could mean for research and conservation. Doors open from 6pm at Goonhavern village talk with the talk starting promptly at 6:30pm. Refreshments will be available. All proceeds go to support the work of Cornwall Mammal Group.
