On Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Askham Bog’s 80th anniversary year learn more about the very first reserve owned by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Join Professor Alastair Fitter for a tour around Askham Bog nature reserve to discover some of the iconic flora, including the amazing giant royal ferns, on this ecologically important site. Once called a ‘cathedral of nature conservation’ by Sir David Attenborough, you'll also delve into Askham Bog’s complex history from the end of the last ice age, through medieval peat cutting, to its modern recovery under the management of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Embrace your wild side - what to expect: Accessibility and terrain The wooden boardwalk is accessible for wheelchair users and buggies. It is a short loop, with a sloped track from the carpark, which can be accessed at all times . Wellies are required for the rest of the site which is boggy with deep pools and ditches. What to bring/wear This event takes place outside so brace yourself for the Yorkshire weather! Sturdy footwear is always recommended. Wellies, waterproof clothing/insect repellent (weather dependent), torch (night events), binoculars, food/water. Toilets and catering There are no facilities on site but you can find accessible toilets at Askham Bar park and ride. You're welcome to bring a drink and/or snack with you but please take your litter home with you. Joining us on the day Meet at the entrance to the nature reserve.
