Short Circuits, No Shortcuts A circuit is a route traced through time and space, through discourse and the symptom, manifested in repetitions, the drive and jouissance. Unconscious circuits index the discourse in which the subject is implied logically and temporally. As Lacan says, “[…] it is the discourse of the circuit in which I am integrated. I am one of its links.”[1] What happens when psychoanalysis takes place under the constraint of time? What can analytic rigour applied to a brief intervention make possible? How does the analyst orient themselves when time is limited? And what can the experience of brief treatments teach us about listening, interpretation and the effects of applied psychoanalysis? Bealach’s first Psychoanalytic Study Day, Short Circuits, No Shortcuts, takes as its point of departure the experience of brief treatments. These treatments are not completed analyses, nor do they offer shortcuts to some predetermined therapeutic endpoint. They are brief treatments under transference that work with the time available, while taking the singularity of each subject into account. Psychoanalytic listening in Bealach is neither an invitation to dialogue nor an invitation to say it all. It is a particular way of listening that opens up another possibility of speech, allowing for singular interpretation via slips, repetitions, contradictions, hesitations and unexpected turns of speech through which something of the subject may emerge. It’s a space in which a brief encounter can open a question, make a cut, and set something in motion that does not necessarily end when the sessions conclude.
