A brief overview of bookbinding practice in Europe and a chance to discuss examples from the collection of the National Library of Ireland. About This Event This workshop will provide a very brief overview of bookbinding practice in Europe, where participants will have the opportunity to handle, discuss and accurately identify and describe bookbinding materials, components and techniques. Examples will be used from the collections of the National Library of Ireland. The workshop will be led by Andrew Megaw (Conservation Services Manager, NLI) and Maria Montcalm (Book Conservator, NLI). A note on payment methods Advance registration is required for this event. We accept payment by invoice or payment via PayPal. Payment via PayPal can be via credit card or with a PayPal account. Invoices may be issued to institutions only. For any queries please contact [email protected]. Meeting Point Reception hall of the National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2. Schedule 10.30am - 3.30pm • The workshop will begin in the morning with a presentation by Andrew Megaw, giving an introduction to the practice of bookbinding in Europe. • Lunch is included in the workshop fee and will be provided on-site. • The workshop continues in the afternoon with a practical bookbinding description activity. Participants will work in pairs to describe bookbindings from the collection of the National Library of Ireland. This workshop is intended to support education and development, and people at all stages of learning are welcome. Equipment list The workshop leaders will provide the group with examples of bookbindings from the collection, model bindings, handouts and online resources. Participants may bring a laptop, but this is not essential. Please note that while the workshop room and WC facilities are accessible by lift, the room designated for catering is currently only accessible by a flight of stairs.
